A Medusa agency in Nijmegen, working across Europe

Medusa e-commerce agency for European brands

Webshops for brands and companies selling to consumers (B2C) or business customers (B2B) that you own: the code, the data and the freedom to make the shop work the way you work. AI first, hosted in the EU, for companies across Europe.

What Medusa can do

What can Medusa do?

Six scenarios we often come across, with how other brands solved them on Medusa. Their figures, their sources. Not our cases.

  • B2B · wholesaleScenario

    B2B orders that process themselves

Business customers still order by email, with their own prices and an ERP behind it. Medusa becomes the order hub: orders come in, get prepared and flow on to the systems you already have.

80%lower operating costs, order processing 9× faster

How INSPIRED Pet Nutrition did it: an order system on Medusa that connects two ERPs and turns order emails into draft orders with AI.

  • D2C · subscriptionsScenario

    Subscriptions without revenue-based platform fees

A brand that bills the same customer every month pays a SaaS platform a percentage again on every renewal. On Medusa you build the subscription logic into your own shop.

€22,300per month (source: 25,000 US dollars, ECB rate of 5 November 2026) in platform and transaction fees on Shopify Plus; in the first month after the move, checkout conversion was around 30% higher

How Healthletic did it: from Shopify Plus to Medusa, including all existing subscribers.

    Source: Healthletic via Medusa ↗

  • B2C · internationalScenario

One brand, dozens of countries, several warehouses

Growing abroad means more currencies, tax rules and fulfilment partners. Medusa routes orders to the right warehouse without loose scripts growing around it.

4 monthsuntil all fulfilment ran on Medusa

How Eight Sleep did it: fulfilment across 10+ 3PLs and 30+ markets, built with one full-time engineer.

These are not Alpha Digital clients and not results of our work. They are scenarios with figures from Medusa's published customer stories, in our own words. Every figure appears in the linked source. Our own case is Shingyo.

All six scenarios and what they save

What Medusa can do · costs

What can you save with Medusa?

No revenue share to a platform, less manual work and a faster launch. Four figures from brands that shared them publicly. Not ours, but you can check every one.

What it saves you depends on your platform, volume and processes. We work that out together in the intro call, without promises up front.

Why Medusa

Why Medusa, and when not

Shopify and WooCommerce are not bad choices. They are the wrong choice when the platform becomes the limit of your process.

  • Yours, not rented

Code and data are yours. No rented theme, no transaction percentage to the platform.

  • Built for custom work

Price lists, customer groups and your own workflows are the basis of the framework, not a detour via apps.

  • Connects with what you have

ERP, PIM, warehouse or accounting: we fit the process, with error handling to match.

  • One engine, several shops

Countries, brands and sales channels from one backend. No more maintaining the same thing twelve times.

TopicShopifyWooCommerceMedusa
What it isA hosted platform. Shopify decides the checkout, the app layer and the subscription.A webshop plugin on WordPress. You (or your host) run the server. An open-source commerce backend in Node.js. The core is MIT. You host it, or you use Medusa Cloud.
Who owns the shopYou rent a place in Shopify. You can leave, but you cannot take the setup with you one-to-one.The installation is yours, including the plugin stack and the WordPress content.Code and data are yours. The storefront is its own Next.js project, not a rented theme.
Getting startedFast. A theme, add products, pay through the Shopify layer. Also fast, as long as your needs fit in plugins.Slower at the start. First the design of data model, pricing and storefront. After that, adding features is cheaper than pushing against a platform limit.
Custom workPossible, up to Shopify's limits. Beyond that it becomes an app or a workaround.Possible in PHP and plugins. Every extra plugin is also an update risk. The framework is made for writing your own modules and workflows. That is work, not a checkbox.
B2BWorks for some B2B brands, especially on higher plans. Complex contract prices and quotes often pinch.Possible with plugins for price lists and roles. That stack gets fragile once an ERP owns the price.Customer groups, price lists and tiered pricing are in the open-source modules. We add company accounts, quotes and approvals, partly on Medusa's B2B starter.
IntegrationsMany ready-made apps. You connect your own system via the API, within Shopify's rules.Plugins for well-known packages. A non-standard ERP means custom work in WordPress. No app store in between. We connect the system you already have, batch or real-time, with error handling that fits the process.
CostsSubscription, and often transaction fees if you do not use their payment layer. Apps on top.Low licence cost, but hosting, plugins and ongoing maintenance. The bill is in the hours as the stack grows. No transaction percentage to Medusa itself. You pay for development, hosting and your payment provider's rates. Enterprise features such as advanced permissions (RBAC) have a separate licence. Most shops do not need them.
Fits whenA D2C brand needs to launch fast and the shop fits within Shopify. The catalogue is manageable, content lives in WordPress, and the team wants to keep that admin. The shop is a system: B2B, several price lists, an ERP or PIM, or a storefront you want to control yourself.
Fits less whenYou want to control the checkout, the data or the pricing rules structurally yourself.Every new wish becomes a plugin and updates get in each other's way.You want a theme live this month and connect nothing else. Then Medusa is too much of a tool.

Ownership

No vendor lock-in: you own everything

With Shopify or Lightspeed you rent the platform: stop paying and the shop stops. With us everything is in your name: the code, the hosting account and the data. Also if you later want to continue with someone else.

  1. 01Code

    GitHub, in your name

The code lives in a GitHub repository in your own account or organisation, with documentation. Any developer or agency can take it over.

  2. 02Data

    Database, in your name

Products, customers and orders sit in the database of your own Medusa Cloud project, in the EU. You can download a backup or move at any time.

  3. 03Hosting

    Medusa Cloud, or self-hosted

New shops run on Medusa Cloud, in an organisation in your name. We get access for as long as you want. Prefer to host it yourself? That works too.

  4. 04Platform

    Medusa, open source (MIT)

The Medusa core is open source under the MIT licence. No licence fees for the core and no transaction percentage to the platform.

To be fair

Owning also means paying for what you use yourself: the Medusa Cloud bill (or your own hosting) runs directly through your account. And your own shop needs maintenance: updates, security, an eye on the integrations. You can get that from us, or from anyone you like.

The rights to custom work are set out in article 10 of our terms and conditions (intellectual property).

About maintenance and support

Hosting

Medusa Cloud in Frankfurt: your data stays in the EU

By default we set up new shops on Medusa Cloud, in the Europe Central region. The infrastructure is managed; the bill and the account are in your name.

  1. 01EU

Your data stays in the EU

The project runs in the Europe Central region: Frankfurt, eu-central-1. Backend, database, backups, uploaded files, Redis and search indexes all live there.

  2. 02Backups

    Daily managed backups

The database is backed up every day and stored encrypted. Restoring or downloading is done from the dashboard.

  3. 03Infra

    Managed Redis and autoscaling

Database, Redis and scalable servers are managed by Medusa. No servers of your own to look after.

  4. 04Exit

    Self-hosting is possible too

Medusa is open source. If you want to run the shop on your own infrastructure, the code moves with you. You are not locked into Medusa Cloud.

To be fair

Medusa Cloud is also a service from an external provider, just like Shopify. The difference: with Medusa you can leave and host it yourself, with the same code and your own data. Shingyo, our first project, still runs on Vercel and Supabase.

Approach

From intro call to handover

  1. 01

    Intro call

We look at your catalogue, your customers, the systems around them and what is not working today. One conversation, not a twenty-slide sales deck.

  2. 02

    Proposal

You get a scope, an architecture sketch and a custom quote. No off-the-shelf package. If Medusa does not fit, we say so.

  3. 03

    Build

Medusa, the storefront and the integrations come together in short cycles. You see a working environment along the way, not a big bang at the end.

  4. 04

    Launch and handover

Redirects if you replace an old shop, a walkthrough for your team, and the code in your name. After that, maintenance is a choice, not a lock-in.

One-person agency

You work directly with the owner

Alpha Digital is a one-person agency run by Tom Rijs since 2018. The person on the intro call also writes the code and picks up the phone when something comes up. No account manager, no middleman.

That keeps lines short and choices honest: if Medusa does not fit what you need, I will tell you in the first conversation.

FAQ

Questions we often get

Question not listed? Request a callback.

What does Alpha Digital do?

We build Medusa webshops for brands and companies that sell to consumers (B2C and D2C) or to business customers (B2B). That is the commerce backend plus, if you need it, a Next.js storefront, integrations and the migration from your current platform. We are based at Stationsplein 26 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and work with companies across Europe.

Do you work with companies outside the Netherlands?

Yes. We work remotely with brands and wholesalers across Europe, in English or Dutch. Intro calls and project meetings happen online; you are welcome to visit the office in Nijmegen too.

Can you build a shop for several countries and currencies?

Yes. Medusa has regions, currencies, tax settings and sales channels in its core, so several countries or brands can run from one backend. Shingyo, our own case, sells across Europe including shingyo.nl and shingyo.se.

Where is the data hosted?

By default we set up new shops on Medusa Cloud in the Europe Central region (Frankfurt, eu-central-1), in an account in your name. Self-hosting on your own infrastructure is possible too.

When do you choose Medusa, and when not?

Medusa fits when the shop needs its own pricing rules, integrations or a custom storefront. Shopify or WooCommerce fit when you want to launch quickly and your needs stay within the platform or a small set of plugins. We do not push Medusa when a theme is enough.

What does a Medusa webshop cost?

You get a custom quote after a free intro call. The price depends on the catalogue, B2B logic, integrations and whether we also migrate. We do not work with a price menu.

How do we schedule an intro call?

Use the form on the contact page: send a message or request a callback. We are available on weekdays from 09:00 to 16:30 CET. Bring along what you use today and where it pinches.

Free intro call

What is your challenge?

Twelve shops that need to become one, an ERP that sets the price, or a checkout that does not do what you want. Tell us in one call. You will hear honestly whether Medusa fits.
